A site with decent structure and a speed problem is a tune-up — usually a few thousand dollars of technical work. A site built on a page builder that ships a megabyte of JavaScript, has no schema, and cannot be restructured without fighting the theme is a rebuild. Why does site speed actually matter?
Because it is one of the few marketing variables with a directly measured revenue effect, and most Hawaii sites are failing it on mobile.

Google does not measure your website on your machine. It measures real visits from real people, and it scores you at the 75th percentile of those visits over the previous 28 days. That means three out of every four visitors have to hit the threshold for the page to be considered good.

The Hawaii-specific speed problem: your photos are the product
Here is a genuine tension nobody warns Hawaii businesses about. Your imagery is not decoration — it is the thing you are selling. A tour operator without stunning photos of the coastline is not going to convert anyone. A vacation rental with three dim phone snapshots loses to the listing with twenty bright ones.
But images are also the single most common cause of LCP failure, and Hawaii sites tend to be image-heavy by necessity. Cloudflare's research found image optimization alone can improve LCP by 30 to 50 percent, and that responsive images in modern formats cut mobile page weight by around 34 percent.
The resolution is technical rather than aesthetic. You do not need fewer photos or worse ones. You need modern formats, correctly sized variants served by device, explicit width and height on every image so nothing shifts, lazy loading below the fold, and a preloaded hero so the one image that determines your LCP arrives first. Done properly, a photo-rich Hawaii site can pass Core Web Vitals comfortably. Done the default way, it cannot.
The second problem: booking widgets and third-party scripts
If you take bookings, you almost certainly have a third-party widget on your site — a scheduler, a booking engine, a chat tool, a review carousel. Each one ships JavaScript, and JavaScript is now the leading performance bottleneck on the web. HTTP Archive data puts the average site at around 489KB of JavaScript, up 23 percent since 2022.
That is the main reason INP scores collapsed when it replaced First Input Delay. FID only measured the first interaction; INP measures all of them. Sites that passed FID at around 97 percent now pass INP at closer to 65 percent, which is not a change in the sites — it is a change in what was being measured. The frustration was always there.
The fix is sequencing, not removal. Load the booking widget when someone scrolls toward it or taps a button, not on page load. Defer chat until after the page is interactive. Drop the review carousel and render the reviews as static text, which is faster and gets read by AI engines besides. None of this reduces functionality; it just stops the page fighting itself while a customer is trying to use it.
When a rebuild is genuinely the honest answer
We would rather do a $3,000 technical project than a $9,000 rebuild if the $3,000 fixes it, because the client who gets the honest answer tends to come back. But some sites cannot be optimized into winners, and stringing that out is worse than saying it.
The clearest signals are structural. A site where the page builder generates markup you cannot control. A theme where fixing the layout shift means fighting the framework on every template. A structure where every service lives on one page and separating them means rebuilding the navigation, the URLs, and the internal linking anyway. At that point the "repair" costs more than the replacement and you still end up with a compromised foundation.
Platform choice genuinely matters here, and the data is not subtle. Framework-based sites pass Core Web Vitals at around 58 percent against roughly 38 percent for WordPress — largely because of architectural advantages in code splitting, image handling and rendering, and because JavaScript-heavy themes keep proliferating. That is not an argument that WordPress cannot be fast. It is an argument that most WordPress sites are not, and that the default path leads somewhere slow.

A website built in 2026 has a second audience that did not exist five years ago: the engines assembling answers about your business. They need to parse your site quickly, extract self-contained facts, and corroborate what you claim.
Practically that means structured data on every page rather than as an afterthought, question-phrased headings with complete answers directly underneath, business facts stated as text rather than baked into images, an llms.txt index at the root, and robots.txt that explicitly permits the AI crawlers instead of blocking them by accident through a plugin default.
None of this is expensive when it happens during the build. All of it is expensive when it has to be retrofitted onto a structure that was not designed for it. Design credibility is a conversion variable
None of the above means aesthetics do not matter. A visitor decides whether your business looks legitimate in a couple of seconds, largely on visual impression, and that judgment gates everything that follows. In tourism especially, where the customer is a stranger from four thousand miles away weighing whether to send money to a business they have never heard of, looking credible is doing real work.
The mistake is treating design and performance as opposites. Bold typography costs almost nothing when it is a single subsetted weight. High-contrast color is free. Motion built in CSS barely touches the main thread. The expensive trends are specific — heavy 3D, autoplaying video above the fold, scroll animation driven by large JavaScript libraries — and every one of them has a cheaper equivalent that looks nearly as good and loads three times faster. You can have the drama. You just cannot have it before the page is usable.

Drag-and-drop builders generate markup nobody controls and ship JavaScript nobody needs. They are why so many sites fail INP. If you specifically need to edit layouts yourself in a visual editor, we are probably not your shop.
