AI search optimization, without the hype.
What is AI SEO, AIO, or GEO?
They are all names for the same job: structuring your business information so AI engines cite and recommend you when someone asks them a question.
You will see it called AI SEO, AIO (AI optimization), GEO (generative engine optimization), AEO (answer engine optimization), and LLMO. The industry has not settled on a term. The goal is identical — be one of the handful of sources the AI assembles its answer from, rather than one of the thousands it ignores.
Is this actually different from regular SEO, or is it the same thing rebranded?
Partly the same, and increasingly not. Google's own June 2026 guidance says optimizing for its AI features "is still SEO." But for ChatGPT and Perplexity, the picture has genuinely diverged.
Ahrefs found only about 6.82 percent of ChatGPT citations overlap with Google's top ten results. Broader analyses put the overlap between top Google rankings and AI-cited sources at under 20 percent, down from around 70 percent. So a strong Google position is still the entry ticket — but it no longer buys you the citation.
Does this matter yet for a small Hawaii business?
Yes, and the reason is not volume. It is that AI traffic converts several times better than anything else, and the citation authority you build now compounds.
Seer Interactive measured AI referral visitors converting at 15.9 percent from ChatGPT and 10.5 percent from Perplexity, against 1.76 percent for organic search. Ahrefs found AI visitors produced 12.1 percent of signups while accounting for just 0.5 percent of traffic. Small numbers, disproportionate value — because the person clicking through from an AI answer has already been recommended you.
Should I pay extra for this as a separate service?
Usually not. Most of the work overlaps with good SEO, and the industry has learned to charge twice for it.
GoodFirms found that among agencies raising prices in 2025 and 2026, 37 percent cited GEO and AEO work as the reason, frequently billed separately at $900 a month or more. Why your rankings and your citations stopped matching.
For most of the last decade, optimizing for Google was optimizing for everything. If you ranked first, you got the featured snippet, the voice answer, and the traffic. One target, one strategy.
That stopped being true somewhere in 2025. As the PR executive Ronn Torossian put it when the data first landed: when the overlap between Google's top results and AI citations was around 70 percent, optimizing for Google was effectively optimizing for both — at under 20 percent, that thinking is broken.
The mechanical reason is that AI search is not a ranking function at all. It is a retrieval pipeline. When you ask an AI a question, it does not paste your question into a search box. It breaks the question into smaller sub-queries, searches for each one separately, retrieves candidate passages, scores them, and then synthesizes an answer with citations attached. The decision about whether to cite you happens during retrieval, at the passage level — not at the page level, and not against your domain authority.
This is why a page can rank tenth on Google and get cited constantly, and why a page can rank first and never get quoted. What gets retrieved is a self-contained chunk of text that directly answers a specific sub-question, in language that reads like a reference document rather than a sales page.
The Princeton study, and the three things that reliably work
The foundational research on this is a peer-reviewed study out of Princeton, Georgia Tech and IIT Delhi — Aggarwal et al., presented at KDD 2024 — which tested optimization strategies across 10,000 queries in 25 domains and measured the visibility lift for each.
The findings have held up remarkably well, and they are unglamorous. Adding direct quotations from named sources lifted AI visibility by up to 41 percent. Adding statistics lifted it by up to 32 percent. Citing your sources lifted it by up to 30 percent. Improving fluency lifted it by up to 28 percent. Keyword stuffing, unsurprisingly, did nothing.
Read those four together and a pattern emerges: AI engines cite content that behaves like a source. Specific numbers, attributed claims, named references, clean prose. The kind of writing that would survive an editor. "Conversion rates improved 47 percent after the redesign" gets cited; "we deliver outstanding results" does not, and never will, no matter how many times you publish it.
That is the entire reason this page — and every page on this site — is written with sources attached to the numbers. It is not academic habit. It is the format that gets quoted.
Being cited matters even when nobody clicks
Here is the uncomfortable part. An analysis of 68,879 Google searches by Chapekis and Lieb found that only about 1 percent of users who encounter an AI summary click a cited source, against roughly 15 percent who click a traditional result when no AI summary appears. Seer Interactive measured organic click-through falling around 61 percent on queries where an AI Overview appears, across 3,119 informational queries at 42 organizations.
So if you measure AI search purely in sessions, it will look like a losing proposition. That is the wrong frame. Three things are true simultaneously:
- The clicks you do get are extraordinarily valuable. Conversion rates of 10 to 16 percent against organic's 1.76 percent are not a rounding error. The person arriving has been pre-sold by a source they trust.
- Citation influences decisions without a click. If ChatGPT tells someone planning a Kauai trip that three specific operators are the ones to look at, that shortlist is formed whether or not anyone clicks. You are either on it or you are not.
- Citation lifts your traditional results too. BrightEdge found pages cited in AI Overviews earn roughly 35 percent more organic clicks than uncited competitors on the same page. Being in the answer makes your blue link more attractive, not less.
The part that is genuinely hard: third-party mentions
The single most awkward finding in this whole field is that your own website is not the main lever. Ahrefs' 2026 research found external brand mentions correlate with AI Overview appearances at about 0.664 — the strongest signal they measured. AirOps found brands are roughly 6.5 times more likely to be cited through third-party sources than through their own domain.
Reddit alone accounts for something like 46.7 percent of Perplexity's citations. Forums, review platforms, local news, industry publications, and community discussions carry disproportionate weight because an AI engine treats them as independent corroboration in a way it will never treat your About page.
This is where SEO stopped being a first-party game. You can control your own site completely and still be invisible, because the engines are asking what other people say about you. Freshness is a ranking factor again, and it is aggressive
Traditional SEO taught everyone that a good page could rank for years. AI citation does not work that way. Analyses through 2026 found content updated within the last 30 days earning several times more AI citations than stale content, with the large majority of AI Overview citations drawn from recent material.
Perplexity is the extreme case: it weights freshness at roughly 40 percent of its ranking signal, serves results around 3.3 times fresher than Google, and actively deprioritizes content older than 30 days for medium-velocity topics. A page that has not been touched in a year is, to Perplexity, close to invisible regardless of quality.
The practical implication for a small business is a maintenance rhythm rather than a publishing sprint. A handful of genuinely important pages, reviewed and updated quarterly with current numbers and dates, will outperform forty pages published once and abandoned.
Measurement, and the mistake nearly everyone makes
Analytics does not handle this well. Out of the box, GA4 buckets AI engine referrals into Direct or (none) — which means most businesses running AI search work are measuring approximately none of it, and concluding it does nothing.
The fix is unglamorous but necessary: build referral segments for the AI sources explicitly, track branded search volume as a proxy for shortlist influence, and run a recurring prompt audit — literally asking the engines the questions your customers ask and recording whether you appear. That last one is the metric that matters most, and it is the one the tool above is a starter version of. The industry term for the underlying metric is Share of Model: how often your brand appears in AI responses for a defined set of prompts, relative to competitors. It is the AI-era replacement for share of voice, and unlike rankings, it cannot be checked with a rank tracker.
Five platforms, five different games.
Yext analyzed 17.2 million AI citations and found each platform applies fundamentally different retrieval logic. What earns a citation on Perplexity can be invisible on Gemini. Optimizing for "AI search" as one category is like running the same campaign on LinkedIn and TikTok.
ChatGPT
OAI-SearchBot · ChatGPT-UserThe traffic king and the hardest to get cited by. It retrieves live results through Bing's index rather than Google's, which is the single most actionable fact on this page for most businesses.

The move: submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools and claim Bing Places. Most Hawaii businesses have never touched Bing, which means they are invisible to the platform driving the overwhelming majority of AI referrals. It takes about twenty minutes and costs nothing.
Perplexity
PerplexityBotThe most accessible platform for a smaller business, and the fastest feedback loop. It runs its own index, cites on every single query, and cares more about freshness and specificity than about domain authority.

The move: this is the one to chase first if you cannot crack Google's page one. Keep a small number of substantive pages genuinely current, with dated updates and specific local facts. Results show up in weeks, not quarters.
Google AI Overviews
Googlebot · Google-ExtendedThe one where your existing SEO work still does most of the lifting. Google's own June 2026 documentation states plainly that optimizing for its generative features is still SEO.

The move: answer-first content structure. A direct, self-contained answer in the first two sentences under a question-phrased heading, then the supporting detail. That format is what gets lifted into the Overview.
Claude
ClaudeBot · Claude-WebLower volume than the others but a notably high-value audience, and increasingly used for research-heavy decisions rather than quick lookups.
- Referral visitors convert at around 5% against organic's 1.76% (Seer, 2025)
- Favors well-sourced, carefully qualified content over promotional claims
- Requires ClaudeBot and anthropic-ai to be permitted in robots.txt
The move: make sure you are not accidentally blocking the crawler, then write like you are prepared to be quoted. Hedged, honest, specific content does better here than confident marketing language.
Gemini
Google-ExtendedDeeply tied into Google's ecosystem, which means your Google Business Profile data feeds it directly for local queries. For a Hawaii business, this is where local SEO and AI search visibly become the same project.

What they all share
The common floorDespite the divergence, every engine needs the same baseline before any platform-specific tactic matters at all.
- A crawlable, fast site that is not blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt
- Consistent business facts everywhere, so the entity resolves cleanly
- Self-contained passages that answer one question completely
The move: get the floor right before chasing any single platform. A slow site with thin content and contradictory business data will not get cited anywhere, no matter how perfectly the FAQ schema is formatted.
Four content changes with measured lift.
Most AI search advice is pattern-matched from agency blog posts. This is not. These figures come from a controlled academic study across 10,000 queries in 25 domains, and they have held up in practice.
Add quotations
Direct quotes from named people or organizations. An AI engine treats an attributed quote as verifiable material it can safely reuse, which is exactly what it is looking for.
Add statistics
Specific numbers beat adjectives every time. "Bookings rose 34% in the first quarter" is citable. "Great results for our clients" is not, and never becomes so.
Cite your sources
Link to where your claims came from. Counterintuitively, sending people elsewhere makes you more likely to be treated as a reliable source worth citing yourself.
Improve fluency
Clean, well-structured prose that reads like reference material rather than marketing copy. The engines are extracting passages, and awkward writing does not extract well.

Why island businesses have an unusually good shot at this.
AI search is harder for most businesses than traditional SEO. In Hawaii, for four specific structural reasons, it is easier.
Your visitors research from four thousand miles away
A resident looking for a plumber searches on their phone from down the road. A visitor planning a Hawaii trip is sitting on a couch in Ohio eleven weeks out, asking an AI assistant open-ended questions like "what should I book on the Big Island" and "is a Road to Hana tour worth it."
That is the exact query format AI engines were built for, and it happens long before anyone opens Google Maps. For visitor-facing Hawaii businesses, AI trip planning is not a future channel — it is where the shortlist gets built.
There are far fewer competing sources
When an AI answers "best accountants in Chicago," it is choosing among thousands of pages. When it answers "best snorkel tour in Kailua-Kona," the pool of genuinely relevant sources is small enough that a single well-built page can plausibly become one of the handful it draws from.
Thin markets are a disadvantage in traditional SEO because the volume is low. In AI citation they are an advantage, because the competition for the citation slot is low too.
Perplexity does not care that you cannot crack page one
This is the finding that should change how a lot of Hawaii businesses think about search. Roughly 80 percent of the content Perplexity cites does not rank in Google's top results at all.
If you have been fighting for a page-one Google position for two years and losing to a national directory, that fight is not the only game. A genuinely useful, current, specific page can be cited by Perplexity next month regardless of where it sits on Google.
Almost nobody local is doing it
Enterprise marketing teams have GEO programs. Small and mid-market businesses largely do not — and in Hawaii specifically, we have yet to audit a local competitor doing structured AI search work of any depth.
Citation authority accumulates the way domain authority did. The brands AI cites in 2027 are largely the brands it learned to cite in 2026. That window does not stay open indefinitely, and it is the cheapest it will ever be right now.
What AI search optimization actually involves.
No mystique. This is the checklist, and most of it is unglamorous infrastructure rather than clever tricks.
Crawler access audit
Confirming GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and the rest are permitted in robots.txt. A surprising number of sites block them by accident through a plugin default or an inherited config.
Bing and Apple presence
Sitemap submitted to Bing Webmaster Tools, Bing Places claimed, Apple Business Connect set up. ChatGPT retrieves through Bing, so this is the highest-leverage twenty minutes available.
Entity consistency
One canonical set of business facts — name, address, phone, hours, services, pricing — repeated identically everywhere. Engines will not confidently cite a business whose own data contradicts itself.
Answer-first restructuring
Question-phrased headings with a complete, self-contained answer in the first two sentences underneath. This is what makes a passage retrievable, and it is the single biggest on-page change most sites need.
Fact density and sourcing
Replacing adjectives with numbers, attributing claims to named sources, and adding dates. The Princeton findings applied deliberately rather than accidentally.
Structured data
Schema markup that machine-states what the prose says: organization, service, area served, pricing, FAQ, speakable. Plus an llms.txt index at the root so engines can find the map of your site quickly.
Third-party mention building
The hard, high-value part. Local press, community sites, industry publications, review platforms, and relevant properties within our own Hawaii network — because brands are cited roughly 6.5x more through third parties than through their own domain.
Freshness maintenance
A quarterly cycle on the pages that matter, with current figures and visible update dates. Perplexity in particular treats a year-old page as close to invisible.

For a local service business, almost certainly not. Blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot removes you from the systems that recommend businesses to customers. Publishers with paywalled archives have a genuine argument for blocking. A Kona tour operator does not — you want the model to know your services, your area, and your pricing so it can recommend you. Check your robots.txt, because plugin defaults and inherited configs block these crawlers more often than owners realize.
It is cheap and harmless, and we include one, but we would not oversell it. llms.txt is a proposed standard giving AI engines a clean index of your site's important pages. Adoption by the major engines is not universal and published research has not established a strong correlation with citation rates. Treat it as good housekeeping rather than a lever. Anyone selling llms.txt as a significant AI ranking factor is ahead of the evidence.
Not through your analytics by default, which is why most businesses conclude it does nothing. No, and anyone telling you to abandon local SEO for AI work is selling something. SOCi's 2026 index puts Google's local three-pack at roughly 35.9 percent of brand-visible local queries against roughly 1.2 percent for ChatGPT. The map pack still carries far more local volume. What has changed is that BrightLocal found generative AI use for local recommendations jumping from about 6 percent to about 45 percent of consumers in a single year. Both matter, and helpfully the work overlaps almost entirely.
